Academic Achievement Award
One of the best ways to invest in your community is by supporting the education of the next generation. For this reason, we established the Melissa Marie Watson Academic Achievement Award, a scholarship that’s awarded to two exceptional high school seniors each year.
The award is in memoriam of its namesake, Melissa, who was the daughter of a Synergy employee and excelled academically. Since the program’s inception in 1999, Synergy has awarded nearly $100,000 to outstanding students who are the children or grandchildren of Synergy employees. For 20 years, the scholarship has rewarded high academic achievement, keeping Melissa’s memory alive and supporting the education of many students.
The award is granted based on four criteria: grade point average, SAT or ACT scores, letters of recommendation from school officials, and a one-page essay response to an application question. Applications are accepted from January to April of each year and judged by a panel of academic professionals who are independent of Synergy.
The two winners are given $1,000 for their first year of college and are eligible for subsequent $500 awards each year for three years, as long as they continue to perform academically, and their sponsoring Synergy employee is still with the company.
Our 2018 award winners were Mallory Cavanaugh and Lauren Schultz who are currently freshmen at Purdue University and University of Wisconsin-Madison, respectively. We look forward to sharing our 2019 scholars this spring!
